Classics Take On The Daybreaker

Press Release - 17 September 2014

As the Acceptance of Entries are being sent out for the GoPro Daybreaker Rally the teams are busy getting ready for the challenge.

Attracting not only the competitors in the Brian Green Property Group New Zealand Rally Championship, driven by Vinz, and the Geartech Central Region Rally Series, the Daybreaker has also brought out a number of competitors who are relishing the challenge and the opportunity to compete on some of the best rally roads in the country.

This includes the well known Manawatu locals of Jason Weld in his (more than slightly) modified Datsun nick named a 180WRC, and Keith Stewart in his classic Escort RS1800. For Weld the Daybreaker has become a bit if a tradition, often being the only rally he does in a year. On the other hand Stewart has been involved in a number of classic events of more recent times, and he will be looking forward to using this classic style of Daybreaker as a shakedown event prior to the Silver Fern Marathon Rally later this year.

In fact it appears that a number of drivers are taking advantage of this opportunity. This includes Gray Smith in a Ford Escort and Campbell Wright in his Holden Commodore, both of whom will well remember the marathon Daybreaker events of the 1980s and 90s.

And then there are a few more who will be looking to get double the opportunity. Competing in either the NZ Rally Championship or the Central Region Rally Series, they are also entered in the Silver Fern event. Meaning they get valuable shakedown time as well as points in their respective series.

This group includes long time campaigner Dave Strong, and the form national champion Bruce Herbert back behind the wheel of a Corolla AE86. Meanwhile Brent Taylor will be tackling both events in his more modern Toyota FT86.

Certainly the GoPro Daybreaker Rally has provided an eclectic mix of cars and drivers. From the best in the country in modern machinery, to some of the classical favourites. Meaning that there will be something for everyone, as the spectators and supporters get ready to head to the hills around Taihape and Apiti.
