Rally Wairarapa Plans For A Superb 2014

Press Release - 19 December 2013

The organising team at the Trusthouse Racetech Rally Wairarapa have had a very busy off season as they plan for the 2014 evolution of this iconic motorsport event. Once again the rally is part of the New Zealand Rally Championship, moving to be round 4 at the new date of 28 June.

While the event will again include the Central Region Rally Series, 2014 also sees Rally Xtreme returning to the event, as round two of the series. Meanwhile the Malcolm Stewart Classic Rally continues to be highly successful, and will again incorporate the Classic Challenge Trophy, paired with the international Classic Rally of Otago.

And to test the competitors, the organisers have been working closely with the local councils to make a challenging event. “We are planning a superb 180 kilometre gravel surface event using roads we have used previously, although not for some years”, says Bruce Sollitt the committee secretary.

Although recent reports have indicated concerns from the Tararua District Council around motorsport in the region, Rally Wairarapa have been working proactively with the council officers. “We have certainly taken their concerns on board and as a result we have been able to establish what we believe will be a good route for 2014”, says Sollitt.

As a favourite event amongst the best drivers in NZ, being a challenge of skill and ability rather than mechanical reliability, the anticipated route will continue to take in roads that maintain this tradition. With the likelihood of two service park locations, the one day event will bring an influx of supporters, service crew and spectators to the smaller communities of the Tararua and Wairarapa regions.

“It is a unique nature of rally motorsport”, says Sollitt. “While we might be based in Masterton, all the action happens in the smaller areas, where the event brings people and their wallets to those local communities.”

As the hard work continues to bring one of the most respected motorsport events to fruition for 2014, the signs are looking good for another fantastic event.
